Shangrao Seazen Wuyue Plaza: A Symphony of Light and Design

Alex Xu's Award-Winning Nightscape Lighting Design Illuminates Shangrao's Cultural Heritage

The design's unique properties lie in its strategic location and size. Positioned on the urban main road, Fenghuang avenue, the plaza connects Shangrao city and county, with secondary urban main roads on the west and south sides. The total site area is a massive 137,377 square meters, with a gross floor area of 607,749 square meters, offering a large canvas for Xu's innovative lighting design.

The design's realization technology is a testament to Xu's commitment to sustainability. An intelligent lighting control system ensures economical operation, with luminaires using environmentally friendly light sources such as fluorescent lamps and LED lamps. The arrangement of the luminaires is scientifically and reasonably planned to minimize energy consumption and environmental impact.

Technical specifications of the design include the use of 18W LED spotlights, 70W metal halide underground lights, 0.9W LED modules, and 15W LED linear wall washers, among others. These elements work together to create a mesmerizing nightscape that brings the building facade to life.

The design interaction is carefully considered, with cost-effective brand lamps chosen to control total costs while delivering a stunning visual experience. Two modes of light operation are implemented: a daily operation mode that provides basic lighting and safety protection, and a festival operation mode that emphasizes celebratory lighting.

The project, which started in April 2017 in Shenzhen and concluded in June 2019 in Shangrao, posed several design challenges. Xu had to integrate elements of Shangrao’s water culture, dragon culture, and building facade into the nightscape lighting design, creating a harmonious blend of points, streamlines, light, and shadow. The result is a captivating lighting display that evokes the Jiangnan scenery of three rivers flowing together and Shangrao wandering in flowers.
